John O’Callaghan and Cold Blue create blissful atmosphere in latest Subculture Compilation

Subculture

The time of year has arrived to showcase the current ethos of Subculture, John O’Callaghan‘s reputable trance imprint. The head honcho elects rising talent Cold Blue, who in the past two years has established himself as a prodigious new addition to the uplifting and tech circuits, to join him in mixing together the two-disc compilation. Together, the two have created what can only be described as bliss, with each mixer contributing a sentimental mix of melody and euphoria with a touch of edge.

John O’Callaghan opens the mix with an ethereal concoction of his own originals, and those of his friends and colleagues. His first selections lay strings on heavily, making for a cinematic listen that evokes a new-age orchestral feel. Calmness is attained briefly with Activa’s “Meridian,” before the Irish trance don reaches back into uplifting territory with a bout of Craig Connelly, then down into the tech side of the spectrum with his recent output, “Next Stop Muddy Waters.”

The second half of the compilation doubles as an album of sorts for the lauded Cold Blue, who features entirely his personal repertoire in his contribution. Not that this isn’t appreciated; his production abilities are diverse and well-honed, with the German newcomer displaying a particular affinity for crafty melodic arrangement. He reminds listeners of his most iconic singles throughout the past year, including “Speed Of Life,” “Once In Time,” and the more recent “Learning To Live.”
