Good Morning Mix: Listener beware on RL Grime’s ‘Halloween VII’ mix

Good Morning Mix: Listener beware on RL Grime’s ‘Halloween VII’ mixHaloween 7 Rl Grime

In 2018, RL Grime may have been at the peak of his powers. In June of that year, the trap superstar shared “Undo” with Jeremih and Torey Lanez, which would go on to be the lead single for the biggest album of Grime’s career to date, NOVA. Before he geared up for the career-defining LP, RL helped round out 2017 with one of his finest mixes to date, “Halloween VII.”

“Halloween VII” opens in iconic fashion with Shaquille O’Neal making an impassioned plea to get on the mix. “My stuff sounds like dinosaurs playing laser tag with Elon Musk,” O’Neal begs. “They call me the Godzilla gorilla of trap. I need that ‘Halloween’ 7 love.” Unfortunately for Shaq, his tracks didn’t quite make the cut, but RL’s selection is flawless regardless.

Grime begins with an expertly curated trap selection before moving into a bit of rap, highlighted by his “Sicko Mode” edit, which might even top Skrillex’s take on the Travis Scott track. The mix continues to masterfully interweave trap and hip-hop, layering heavy beats from the likes of Wiwek, TroyBoi, Boys Noize, and G Jones with offerings from Nicki Minaj, Meek Mill, Vince Staples, Valee, and many more. However, the mix clearly peaks when the one and only R. L. Stine, author of the Goosebumps series, stops by mid-way through the mix to give the listeners a warning. Whether you’re looking for elite mixing or legendary cameos, “Halloween VII” has it all.

Dancing Astronaut will continue to revisit each installment of RL Grime’s “Halloween” series daily leading up to the arrival of “Halloween IX” on October 29. Follow the journey with our RL Grime Good Morning Mix series.
