Interview: Thelem On Being ‘Third Time Lucky’

Thelem

Thanks to Thelem for joining us this week, as he shares with us a little bit about the making his newest EP. With plenty of experience under his belt, as a producer and DJ he is always looking to expand and grow as an artist. Read on to hear more from Thelem himself.

Thanks for taking the time to speak to us! How long have you been making music for?

Cheers! Thanks for the opportunity. I’ve been making music about 10 years now. I’d say 9 years more serious, the first year was learning the basics, getting to grips with everything.

How do you feel your sound and influences have changed along the way, and are they constantly evolving?

I feel my influences have remained pretty much the same from when I first started. However, I do feel my sound has changed and evolved through time and got more complex, yet still has the same feel and vibe. I guess that dues to learning and progression, I feel like every tune learn something new, whether it’s something big or small.

What would you say your style is all about?

I would say my style is about incorporating different genres, and trying to morph them together with a twist. My tunes always end up dark and moody, I can’t make happy, shiny music.

Which tunes are you particularly feeling right now?

Wow, thats a tough one, there’s so many right now. A lot of producers are making awesome music, it’s hard to know where to begin.

What did you enjoy about making your new EP? Is there a story behind it?

I had lots of fun making this EP, I wanted to continue with my theme of just having fun, not overthinking it, and making some different styles throughout. I think it turned out pretty well. I really enjoyed experimenting with some new sounds. It was also really nice being able to collaborate with my friend Onhell, I don’t do many collabs so it was a lot of fun working on that track together.

Which track from it are you most proud of and why?

I usually end up not liking my music much by the time it’s completed, but I’m pretty stoked on the whole EP. Its tough to pick one I’m most proud of, but I would have to say ‘Third Time Lucky and ‘Tuck It.’

What have been the most fun parts of the year so far for you?

Definitely playing the festivals this summer. I never got the opportunity to play many back home in the UK, so it’s been a lot of fun getting to experience that since living in the States.

If you could give a producer/act just starting out one piece of advice, what would it be?

As cliché as it sounds, just have fun and try not to overthink your art.

If you weren’t making music, you would be…?

I would be a graphic designer for sure.
