Bathed in the luminous, multi-colored lights of the stage, RÜFÜS DU SOL appear as a collective whole to perform, while simultaneously maintaining interiority, as each turns quietly introspective. The alternative electronic dance group members’ individual, visible explorations of their own thoughts comprises the concept for RÜFÜS DU SOL’s official music video for Solace album staple, “Treat You Better.” Shot in Mexico City, the visual transitions from pensive grey scale shots of each RÜFÜS DU SOL constituent, absorbed in his own mind, to spirited live shots of RÜFÜS DU SOL playing before a crowd, to clusters of blue confetti that gently rain over the crowd.
The contemplative nature of the video translates the awareness of the necessity of personal improvement—specifically in a romantic arrangement—into a lucid, thoughtful video that uses color in a symbolic sense. The opening scenes of the video are noticeably devoid of any color, but, as both and song and the visual progress in tandem, color begins to flood the production, first entering when RÜFÜS DU SOL take the stage. The strategic presentation of color shots, as opposed to grey scale or black-and-white cuts, traces the emotive journey that the video follows: realization of a need for inner change, and the effectuation thereof.
