Thanks in large part to his hyper-prolific release schedule and his speaker-rattling production, i_o has moved up the ranks of techno at an astonishing pace. On his latest single, the recent Armada signee takes a page out of the label founder’s playbook with his foray into trance. Teased at live shows months ago, “Castles In The Sky” is scored by frenetic synths and pounding bass, marking an impressive departure from the producer’s techno path.
While it is an unexpected change of pace, “Castles In The Sky” is far from i_o’s first move into trance music. Just a few months ago, i_o shared the trance-inspired “Afterhours Mix” of his progressive house collaboration with Lights, “Annihilation.” i_o also dove into trance several times throughout 2018, with singles “Lazers” and the aptly named “Not Techno” serving as examples.
