In a recent interview with Business Insider, MØ reflected on her smash-hit with Major Lazer, “Lean On.” Having raked up more than 3 billion views since the song was first released in March 2015, the video features “traditional Indian style and garb” with Bollywood-inspired choreography. Now, seven years after the video was released, MØ sat down to talk about how the video contains cultural appropriation, stating,

“The video is so beautiful and amazing, but I definitely think it’s cultural appropriation, for sure. And I’m so happy that people were making me aware of it, because, at the time, I didn’t really understand.”

Once the video was released, criticism regarding the visual’s cultural appropriation was made and served as a learning experience for the Danish singer-songwriter.

“I understand it much better,” she reflected. “I’m still learning. It’s really something that I think a lot about now, with aesthetics and how I approach my look and myself and my songs. I’m not perfect and it’s a learning process, but, I mean, it was problematic.”
